Chikyu Kagaku Kenkyusho’s pamphlet desk (Booth 8 ) is located at the second floor of the JpGU exhibit hall. The JpGU Meeting 2012, concurrent with the JpGU International Symposium 2012, will be held at the Makuhari Messe International Conference Hall.

The JpGU 2012 scientific sessions are divided into 7 categories with each session consisting of several oral and poster presentations – Space and Planetary Sciences; Atmospheric, Ocean, and Environmental Sciences; Human Geosciences; Solid Earth Sciences; Biogeosciences; General (Education and Outreach) Session; and Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Session. This year’s meeting also includes special lectures from respected geoscientists, namely:

The separation of the charred material from the slag requires the use of very concentrated acids. The concentrated acid has a tendency to dissolve the charred material into very fine “soot-sized” particles, which are rarely able to withstand the normal types of pretreatments (acid and alkali) necessary to ensure an accurate result.

Also many times the charred material found in slag originates from very large “old” trees that were used in the fires for smelting operations. As such, the wood can be several hundreds of years old when it is burned and this old wood (charcoal) ends up in the slag yielding a much older age than the actual time of manufacture. We have seen this several times when working with this type of sample, and it is why we typically don’t recommend this type of material for radiocarbon dating.

Because of the amount of acid required and noxious fumes emitted, we do not perform the separation of the charred material from the slag. We only analyze the charred material sent to us.

NOTE: We don’t typically recommend this type of dating due to the difficulty in extraction and the uncertain accuracy in the results.

EGU 2012 expects more than 10,000 geoscientists from at least 95 countries around the world. Over the years, the number of participants have steadily grown. There were around 10,400 participants in 2010 and about 10,700 participants in 2011.

The EGU is a non-profit organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the geosciences and the planetary and space sciences. Its general assembly attracts thousands of scientists each year. The EGU has a diverse portfolio of 14 open-access peer-reviewed journals with authors and editors from more than 69 countries.

The SAA Annual Meeting is one of the major conferences in the archaeology and cultural resources management industries. This year’s activities are divided between two venues – the Marriott Memphis Downtown and Memphis Cook Convention Center. Aside from the symposia, exhibits, poster sessions, workshops, and excursions, the 2012 meeting also include the SAA annual awards and annual business meeting, Cultural Resources Management Career Expo, and the Ethics Bowl – a debate-style competition exploring the ethics of the archaeological practice. The 77th SAA meeting ends on April 22, 2012.
