Charred material from a metallic slag can be dated, but it is generally problematic on several fronts.

The separation of the charred material from the slag requires the use of very concentrated acids. The concentrated acid has a tendency to dissolve the charred material into very fine “soot-sized” particles, which are rarely able to withstand the normal types of pretreatments (acid and alkali) necessary to ensure an accurate result.

Also many times the charred material found in slag originates from very large “old” trees that were used in the fires for smelting operations. As such, the wood can be several hundreds of years old when it is burned and this old wood (charcoal) ends up in the slag yielding a much older age than the actual time of manufacture. We have seen this several times when working with this type of sample, and it is why we typically don’t recommend this type of material for radiocarbon dating.

Because of the amount of acid required and noxious fumes emitted, we do not perform the separation of the charred material from the slag. We only analyze the charred material sent to us.

NOTE: We don’t typically recommend this type of dating due to the difficulty in extraction and the uncertain accuracy in the results.

Days after exhibiting at the Institute for Archaeologists’ annual conference in the UK, Beta Analytic continues its promotional efforts in Europe by joining the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2012 to be held in Vienna, Austria. The event will take place at the Austria Center Vienna from April 22 to April 27, 2012. Beta Analytic’s exhibit can be found at Booth 29 with Operations Manager Florencia Goren taking charge of all inquiries.

“I am excited to represent Beta Analytic in one of the biggest gatherings for geoscientists in Europe. This conference is a great avenue to highlight our organization’s commitment to provide researchers with high-quality data at the shortest possible time. Since late last year, we’ve substantially reduced our standard turnaround time from 25 business days to 14 business days. Our lab is able to provide fast AMS dating services because we have full-time professional technicians focused solely on the analyses. We also have several machines and an efficient chain of custody procedure,” Ms. Goren says.

This year’s programme includes union symposia, inter-division sessions, educational and outreach symposia, as well as oral and poster sessions on disciplinary and interdisciplinary topics covering the full spectrum of the geosciences and the space and planetary sciences. Other activities include lectures, debates, short courses, business meetings, workshops, and presentations in the job and education market.

Beta Analytic’s Booth at the 2012 EGU General Assembly

EGU 2012 expects more than 10,000 geoscientists from at least 95 countries around the world. Over the years, the number of participants have steadily grown. There were around 10,400 participants in 2010 and about 10,700 participants in 2011.

The EGU is a non-profit organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the geosciences and the planetary and space sciences. Its general assembly attracts thousands of scientists each year. The EGU has a diverse portfolio of 14 open-access peer-reviewed journals with authors and editors from more than 69 countries.

Beta Analytic supports the EGU by regularly joining its general assembly as an exhibitor or advertiser.

About Beta Analytic

The company’s Deputy Director and Technical Manager Chris Patrick and Operations Manager for Latin America/Iberian Peninsula Martin Tesini are inviting participants of the five-day event to visit Booth 812 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center.

The SAA Annual Meeting is one of the major conferences in the archaeology and cultural resources management industries. This year’s activities are divided between two venues – the Marriott Memphis Downtown and Memphis Cook Convention Center. Aside from the symposia, exhibits, poster sessions, workshops, and excursions, the 2012 meeting also include the SAA annual awards and annual business meeting, Cultural Resources Management Career Expo, and the Ethics Bowl – a debate-style competition exploring the ethics of the archaeological practice. The 77th SAA meeting ends on April 22, 2012.

“We make it a point to join the SAA conference each year because it gives us the opportunity to meet existing and potential clients and talk about their research. Any inquiries about our services or the radiocarbon dating method are always welcome at our booth,” Mr. Patrick says.

“This is a great way to promote our lab’s improved AMS dating services. We’ve reduced our standard turnaround time to 14 business days. Aside from fast service and reliability, I’m sure our clients will also appreciate the new features of our online results archive accessible 24/7. They can now download quality assurance reports and see photos of their samples processed in our lab,” Mr. Tesini adds.

The next SAA Annual Meeting is slated to take place on April 3-7, 2013, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The SAA leads the archaeological community by promoting research, stewardship of archaeological resources, public and professional education, and the dissemination of knowledge. Its mission is to expand understanding and appreciation of humanity’s past as achieved through systematic investigation of the archaeological record.

Beta Analytic supports the SAA by joining its annual meetings and advertising in The SAA Archaeological Record, a magazine published by the SAA five times a year.
